About the course

Marketing is a broad-ranging course in which you’ll learn all about trends and developments related to marketing (including digital marketing) and market research. You will learn about effective ways to connect with customers and create loyalty for your brand. In other words: how do you make sure your customers will spend their time and money on your product?

First Year

Introduction to the industry

Your first year provides you with a broad introduction to the subject. You will take subjects such as marketing (online and offline), sales and service marketing, communications and international business, and will acquire meeting, negotiation and presentation skills. You will be able to apply your knowledge directly doing various practical assignments.

Second Year

More in-depth study

You will explore various types of digital marketing, market research, customer relationship management, international corporate law, and strategic marketing and communications strategies. In addition, you will also work on developing your research skills and learn all about consumer behaviour. You will finish each term with a project that allows you to combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

Third Year

Internship and specialisation

You will complete a 6-month internship in the Netherlands or another country of your choosing, and will also have the option to specialise in International Marketing, Equine Marketing or International Travel Trade & Event Marketing. You have the option to take various minors at the Emmen or Leeuwarden campus, at one of Stenden’s international campuses, or at another university of applied sciences in the Netherlands or elsewhere.

Fourth Year

Final Year

You will take a more in-depth look at marketing, develop your strategic skills and choose a specialisation. The main focus this year will be on management, developing business strategies and marketing strategies (including digital). You will also become acquainted with a relatively new area that is nevertheless an important part of many business organisations: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). You will complete your course with a final-year project.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a style of active learning in which you learn by solving problems. You will develop teamwork skills and learn to collaborate with students from different cultural backgrounds, as well as develop your practical abilities, including meeting and presentation skills.

In your third year, you will have the option to specialise by taking a number of minors: these are electives in which you focus on a specific subject or expand your knowledge by taking an additional subject. This allows you to truly take charge of your education by ‘customising’ your course.
You can take these minors at the Emmen branch or at one of the Stenden campuses located in Qatar, South Africa, Thailand or Bali (Grand Tour). You can also choose from various minors offered by other courses and universities of applied sciences – this is all part of broadening your academic skills.

Minors available in Marketing:

International Marketing

To be confident in complex international environments you need to be enterprising, pro-active, commercially-minded and competitive. This minor focuses specifically on triggering these abilities and skills in you and teach you how to use them in practice. You do that by for example working independently on a marketing plan- or campaign. You will dive into subjects such as marketing communications, cross cultural management and market research and learn how to take strategic decisions in these fields.

You will be trained as an expert and specialised manager with extensive and up-to-date knowledge of the equestrian world, both domestic and internationally. You will learn about equestrian law, horse sale, management and marketing. After you graduate potential places of employment include riding schools, equestrian centres and show jumping, galloping and dressage arenas, as well as organisations that stage equestrian events.
